Motorcycle Crashes in Florida

Data from 2022 shows that 6.4% of motorcycle crashes in Florida were fatal, a rate significantly higher than the 0.8% fatality rate for all traffic crashes. Notably, Miami-Dade County accounts for 7.5% of these fatalities, underlining the risks of riding in urban areas.

This is particularly worrying considering that over 28% of motorcycle crashes in 2021 involved alcohol.

Understanding Factors That Contribute to a Motorcycle Crash in Florida

Florida's high population and tourist influx contribute to the increased number of vehicles on the road, thereby raising the likelihood of accidents. The long distances traveled by bikers during the holiday season is another factor, as it can cause fatigue, increase tire pressure, and create road hazards. Before riding down to Florida -- make sure you make enough time for your route to be able to make frequent stops or even a nap to ensure that you are aware of your surroundings.

Given these statistics, it's crucial for motorcyclists to adopt safety measures during the 2023 holiday season:

  • Always wear a DOT-approved helmet and highly visible clothing.

  • Avoid riding in heavy traffic and stay away from high-risk roads.

  • Be vigilant about other vehicles and practice defensive riding.

  • Avoid distracted riding -- eating, adjusting the radio, texting, or talking to your fellow bikers can contribute to an accident.

  • Avoid riding under the influence of alcohol -- if you're on Main Street in Daytona Beach, make sure you take time after either hitting the fun bars or the beach, take extra measures to avoid driving while intoxicated.

  • Seek additional training beyond the Basic Rider Course.
