Cooler Florida temperatures also mean that there is an increase in accidents on the roads. According to recent statistics, the number of car accidents and motorcycle accidents during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's tend to go up. Factors such as increased traffic, adverse weather conditions while driving down to Daytona Beach, and impaired driving contribute to this alarming trend.

During the Thanksgiving holiday alone, it is estimated that there are over 507 fatalities resulting from car accidents. The Christmas holiday period also sees a similar spike in accidents, with an estimated 346 fatalities. New Year’s Day is no exception, with projections indicating that 408 people may die on U.S. roads during this holiday period.

Drunk driving and distracted driving are major contributors to these incidents. These statistics serve as a stark reminder of the importance of taking safety precautions during holiday travel on your bike allow for you to ride by minimizing the risks associated with potentially being involved in a motorcycle accident.

Understanding Factors That Contribute to a Motorcycle Crash in Florida

Data from 2022 shows that 6.4% of motorcycle crashes in Florida were fatal, a rate significantly higher than the 0.8% fatality rate for all traffic crashes. Notably, Miami-Dade County accounts for 7.5% of these fatalities, underlining the risks of riding in urban areas.

Given these statistics, it's crucial for riders to adopt safety measures during the 2023 holiday season:

  • Always wear a DOT-approved helmet and highly visible clothing.

  • Avoid riding in heavy traffic and stay away from high-risk roads.

  • Be vigilant about other vehicles and practice defensive riding.

  • Avoid distracted riding -- eating, adjusting the radio, texting, or talking to your fellow bikers can contribute to an accident.

  • Avoid riding under the influence of alcohol -- if you're on Main Street in Daytona Beach, make sure you take time after either hitting the fun bars or the beach, take extra measures to avoid driving while intoxicated.

  • Seek additional training beyond the Basic Rider Course.

Plan Your Ride Ahead of Time

Remember to plan your route in advance, prepare your motorcycle adequately, and practice riding driving habits.
